Dangerous heat developing
Miss. Valley, South bakes

An unending combination of temperatures in the middle to upper 90s and rapidly building humidity is producing a dangerous situation across the South and Plains.

The same high pressure bringing Saharan dust into Texas is also bringing a soupy, Gulf of Mexico air mass northward into the Plains and South. Our WeatherRadar is showing a cloud-free sky and our TemperatureRadar displays temperatures jumping into the 90s for the next several days.

Although upper 90s doesn’t seem too hot heading into August, the humidity levels are rapidly rising. This is sending the feels-like temperatures into the triple digits, with Mississippi Valley cities like Memphis and St. Louis having feels-like temperatures approaching 110 degrees.

These are dangerously hot temperatures, so be sure to plan outdoor activities during the early-morning hours. Also, be sure to check on elderly friends and relatives to make sure they have a cool place to be during the hottest time of the day.

This heat wave will continue through the rest of the work week as it spreads across the South and into the Southeast. Record highs are possible in Nashville and eastern Tennessee and northern Georgia on Thursday and Friday.
